Roofing Carpentry
Whether you are constructing a new flat roof or replacing an existing one you need to have good carpentry skills. Flat roof carpentry is relatively straight-forward, however you still need a good understanding of how a flat roof works. There are many elements to a flat roof, from the size of the roof joists to the style of the fascia boards that need to be taken into consideration. Flat roof coverings rely heavily on the quality of the carpentry so it has to be right!.

Roof Valleys
As part of our service we also repair or re-cover roof valleys. Replacing old lead or copper valleys with a 2 or 3 layer Paralon membrane system has several advantages. It is not only cheaper than replacing with lead or copper, but there also no need for steps in the valley, which can simplify construction and reduce the height rise in the valley to a minimum. The Paralon system is very versatile which allows for greater complexity in design. Once laid a Paralon valley will last for many years.

Slate and Tile roof repairs
When installing a flat roof, it is quite common that a certain amount of slating and tiling is required. For example, when an extension roof meets a pitched roof, the last 2/3 courses of slates or tiles must be removed to allow the new roof membrane to dress in under the breathing membrane or slating felt of the pitched roof.
Expertise is required to do this job correctly especially at corner junctions where lead soakers are used to seal the transition. We are happy to include minor slate and tile repairs as part of our service. |
Counter-flashing
Counter flashings are an intricate part of sealing a flat roof. There is a lot of work in installing a counter flashing correctly. Cutting the wall with a grinder to create a slot for the lead flashing is very important. You need to make sure that any water running down the wall does not leak in behind the upstand of the waterproof membrane. The slot needs to go beyond the plaster work and into the block wall to give adequate protection. A lot of time and effort goes into this part of the job because it is usually the weakest point on any flat roof and it needs to be done right.
